Introduction

Long have there been tools to help us make games. This wiki is the latest in Brainchild Games's repertoire. It is designed to help you and your teams keep track and document your design. It is also used to document information about tools, standards, practices, and plans on your current project.

Just like any new software, you will have to learn to use the MediaWiki interface. However, once you get the hang of it, you will learn that it is a great asset and help you work together on planning and organizing your game project.

What to learn

WikiText

MediaWiki uses a markup language called Wikitext. There are only a handful of symbols and markup you need to pick up to get the hang of it. If you already know how to use html/css you can make use of various tags and styling information to modify and format your pages.

Design document

Your wiki is running Help:HeatherWiki. This is designed to organize and format the design document for Aware. There are some rules you need to follow to allow the mod to organize your design document. These rules may sometimes seem like a pain but it allows the wiki to automate a lot of stuff that would be an even bigger pain to do by hand (promise!).

What does it do?

What kinds of things can using a MediaWiki interface allow you to do?

  • Categorize you content in multiple ways to make it easier to find
  • Discuss designs and documentation on talk pages right behind the content
  • Mix and match content from multiple places with inclusions
  • Use templates to standardize the way you present information and to help remind your team what they need to include when describing things (such as a template that explains what kind of data you show for each NPC. Or what animations you need to make for each character)
  • Track the history of every page so you can see your game project evolve or undo changes easily
  • Accessible through a web interface
  • Watch pages so you are notified when they are updated
  • Rearrange your design document from one easy place
  • Notify your team of needed information with red links
  • Keep all your documentation in one place.
  • Link pages together like any website so your team can find related information with ease.
  • Give new team members the ability to access everything they will ever need to know in one place.
  • See what's going on in other parts of the project.
